In the field, some of the material collected in
this provisional taxon was mistaken for
A.
rasitabula, while other material was
mistaken for A.
homolalittenii. Molecular studies show the
material examined for this provisional taxon to
have a common nrITS sequence. Undoubtedly the confusion with A. homolalittenii occurs in cases in which a whitish orange or pink tint appears in the pileus coloration of A. kryorhodon. Spore data sample sizes are small for both of these taxa, so some caution must be taken when comparing the spore shape and dimensions of the two provisional species. The following figure compares the sporographs of the present species and A. homolalittenii: Given existing DNA data, the present species is separable molecularly from other whitish-capped species of section Vaginatae known to occur in eastern Canada and the northeastern U.S. There are several caveats there, and these are necessary because the research is just beginning and has a very long way to go. Apparently genetically distinct taxa covered in these pages include those listed above and A. albiceps and A. cremeosorora (with a distinctly weakly structured universal veil). There is molecular evidence for other taxa that are generally simiar to those mentioned here, but we do not know enough about the organisms to include them on this site at the present time. Spore data sets and their composite
Each spore data set is intended to comprise a set of measurements from a single specimen made by a single observer; and explanations prepared for this site talk about specimen-observer pairs associated with each data set. Combining more data into a single data set is non-optimal because it obscures observer differences (which may be valuable for instructional purposes, for example) and may obscure instances in which a single collection inadvertently contains a mixture of taxa.
