This specimen was received dried by RET. There
were no associated photographs. At first, RET
considered that the original cap
color might have been orangish because the person
transmitting the material said the collection repre-
sented A. barrowsii and "had been seen by
Charles Barrows." However, the material does
not match A.
barrowsii as preserved in MICH
(collected by Barrows and identified by Dr. A. H.
Smith) and studied by RET. For example, there
is a very clear difference in spore size-shape as
illustrated in the following figure: For the moment, it is probably best to consider the the fresh cap color of the present species to be unknown. The spores of A. sp-NM01 are strongly similar in size and shape to those of A. pahasapaensis, which the reader may wish to review. Spore data sets and their composite
Each spore data set is intended to comprise a set of measurements from a single specimen made by a single observer; and explanations prepared for this site talk about specimen-observer pairs associated with each data set. Combining more data into a single data set is non-optimal because it obscures observer differences (which may be valuable for instructional purposes, for example) and may obscure instances in which a single collection inadvertently contains a mixture of taxa.
