    discussion Two curious characters of this species are (1) that there is an upsidedown cone of tissue under the stem's base and inside the volval sack (2) that the internal limb of the volval sac can be carried up with volval by the cap as the mushroom expands.

    In the latter case, at least for awhile, the internal limb may project under the cap and cover the inner ends of the gills.  (See image no. 2, above.)
