intro For the most part, the data below is derived from the original description (Yang 1997).
cap The fruiting bodies of A. tomentosivolva are medium-sized.  Its cap is 55± mm wide and convex to plano-convex.  The center of the cap is slightly umbonate.  The cap is brown to brownish, becoming darker at center, and undecorated.  Its margin is tuberculate-striate (with striations extending to about 30% of the cap radius), and non-appendiculate.  The cap also has a darker colored ring-like zone at the inner ends of the marginal striations.  The cap's flesh is white.
gills The gills of this species are free, crowded and white with gray to grayish free edges.  The short gills are squarely cut-off or nearly so.
stem The ringless stem is 140 × 7 - 12 mm, nearly cylindric or slightly tapering upward, and hollow.  The stem has a whitish background color with gray squamules.  Its flesh is white;, and there is no basal bulb.  The volva is saccate, 45 × 15 mm, membranous, firm, with a free limb.  The outer surface of the volva has a white background decorated with rust-brown, felty to floccose, irregularly formed patches or warts.
odor/taste The odor is indistinct.
spores Spores of this species measure (11.0-) 11.5 - 14.0 × (10.5-) 11.0 - 13.5 µm and are globose to subglobose and inamyloid.  Clamps are not present on the bases of basidia.
discussion Amanita tomentosivolva was originally described from Yunnan Province, China.  It is probably a subtropical to tropical species.—Z.-L. Yang
