discussion This mushroom was seen by RET when it was collected; however the specimen (if it exists) is in the herbarium of Dr. David T. Jenkins (formerly, Univ. of Alabama, Birmingham).  The fruiting body is Amanita spreta-like—having a brown pileus and a fragile, grayingsh, submembranous ring on the stem.

In recent years, we have seen a number of "ringed ringless amanitas" from the southeastern United States; this has greatly expanded our understanding of the group which is now listed on this site as Amanita stirps Strobilaceovolvata.  It is probable, in our view, that the present species is one of the species now listed or to be listed in the cited stirps.—R.
