25 - 95 mm wide, ivory to pale cream to white at margin (young and mature specimens 4A2), yellow to tan to brown to brownish gray in disc (young specimens 4B4; mature specimens close to 10YR 7/4 or browner), or entirely colored a pale creamy tan (somewhat as in young specimens of A. crenulata Peck [Tulloss, 1990 & Phillips, 1991: 21]), unchanging when cut or bruised, hemispheric at first, then convex with flattened disc and decurved margin, finally plano-convex, subviscid and shiny when moist, otherwise tacky and matt to subshiny to shiny, subshiny when drying in situ; context off-white, sometimes with watery line and/or a pale tan region under pileipellis, sometimes faintly tan above stipe, sometimes with watery line above the lamellae, unchanging when cut or bruised, 4 - 11 mm thick at stipe, thinning evenly to margin or to within 3 - 4 mm of margin and then a membrane; margin barely striate at first (0+R), becoming lightly striate [0.1 - 0.2 (-0.25)R] in age, nonappendiculate; universal veil as patches or warts, subpolygonal, flat, concolorous to white to off-white to pale buff to very pale brownish cream to brownish gray with white edge, detersile, smooth, submembranous, graying with exposure. |

41 - 91 × 7 - 14 mm, white, becoming yellow tan to watery tan to sordid tan with or without slight graying of surface fibrils (below annulus) from handling, narrowing upward to cylindric, occasionally narrowing downward in age, flaring at apex, longitudinally striate, with upward-pointing fibrillose squamules or sometimes breaking up into recurved scales below the annulus, chalky to silky or pulverulent-flocculose (lens) or finely fibrillose (lens) above; bulb white with pseudorhizae at bottom, subnapiform to napiform to subfusiform to fusiform to narrowly clavate (uncommon), almost always pointed at base, 19 - 45 × 10.5 - 30 mm; context off-white or (occasionally) with pale yellow tint, becoming watery gray or watery tan or pale tan when cut or bruised, tannish to pale tan to sordid tan to sordid yellowish tan in larva tunnels, stuffed with white material, with central cylinder 1 - 3.5 mm wide; partial veil membranous, with slightly thickened edge, short, white at first, taking on yellow or tan tones or becoming sordid cream, superior to submedian to median to inferior, flaring and skirt-like, sometimes flaring upward (at least at first), often becoming torn; universal veil in complete collar [as in Amanita pantherina (DC. : Fr.) Krombh.], quite robust at times, occasionally with collar narrow and elongate and then appearing as limb flaring outward or collapsed on base of stipe, occasionally in warts on lower stipe quite similar to those on pileus, sometimes showing color changes as in stipe, occasionally leaving white patch of limbus internus on lower stipe. |

Odor indistinct or at first fungoid to pleasantly fungoid, sometimes having component somewhat like cleaning powder, penetrating-fungoid and slightly unpleasant in age. Taste not recorded. |

Spot test for tyrosinase (paracresol) - inconsistent results from two collections; CMP 3967 positive quickly throughout pileipellis, throughout stipe, in pileus above stipe, and in the outer third of pileus context near attachment to lamellae; CMP3309 reactions weaker and slower reactions overall. Spot test for laccase (syringaldazine) - negative throughout basidiome. 5% KOH - negative on annulus and pileipellis, negative to very pale yellowish on stipe surface. Vouchers: Tulloss 8-19-91-A [CMP0864], 8-23-4-D [CMP3309], 8-24-94-L [CMP3967]. |
