  • intro

The fruiting bodies of A. sinensis are medium-sized to large.

    cap

The cap is 70-120 mm wide, convex to planate, whitish to grayish; its center is grayish to dark gray, and its margin is short-striate.  It is covered with gray, dark gray to gray-brown, subconic warts which are 2-4 mm wide and up to 3 mm high.  Its flesh is white.

    gills

The gills of this species are free to subfree, crowded, white to cream-colored; and the short gills are truncate and of diverse lengths.

    stem

The stem is 100 - 150 × 10 - 25 mm, subcylindric to attenuate upwards; its surface is dirty white to grayish, and covered with grayish, gray to dark gray farinose squamules; the stem's basal bulb is 20 - 35 mm wide, ventricose to nearly clavate.  The stem's ring is nearly apical, its upper surface is white and lower surface grayish, and often torn from the stem during the expanding of the cap.

    spores

Spores of A. sinensis measure (8.0-)9.5-12.5(-13.5) × 7.0-8.5(-9.5) µm and are broadly ellipsoid to ellipsoid, and inamyloid. Clamps are present at the bases of basidia.

    discussion

Amanita sinensis was originally described from China. It occurs in mixed forests with broad-leaved trees and conifers. Its range extends from Nepal to China to Japan.

Amanita sinensis is characterized by its dirty white to grayish pileus with gray to dark grey verrucouse volval warts, subapical and fugacious ring on the stem, ventricose to clavate bulb, inamyloid, broadly ellipsoid to ellipsoid spores, and the presence of clamps.—Zhu L. Yang
