intro

The fruiting bodies of A. sinensis var. subglobispora are usually large.

cap

The cap is 100-150 mm wide, convex to almost applanate, whitish to brownish; its margin is short-striate.  It is covered with dark gray to smoky gray, subconical warts which are 2-5 mm wide and up to 4 mm high.  Its flesh is white.

gills

The gills of this species are free to subfree, crowded, white to cream-colored; and the short gills are truncate and of diverse lengths.

stem

The stem is 150 - 200 × 10 - 25 mm, subcylindric to attenuate upwards; its surface is white to whitish, and densely covered with gray to dark gray farinose to tomentose squamules; the stem's basal bulb is 15 - 30 mm wide and subfusiform.  The stem's ring is fugacious.

odor/taste not recorded.
spores

Spores of this variety measure (7.5–) 8.5–10.5 (–11.0) × (6.5–) 7.5–9.0 (–10.0) μm and are subglobose to broadly ellipsoid, and inamyloid.  Clamps are present on the bases of basidia.

discussion

Amanita sinensis var. subglobispora was originally described from southern China.  It occurs in tropical to southern subtropical forests.—Zhu L. Yang
