discussion	This species has a range extending at least from New York and Connecticut to Florida and Georgia in the eastern U.S. and extending westward at least to Iowa. It is not known west of the Prairie states. Within this range, the species is common in forests and on lawns with established trees. It appears to be associated with at least Oak (Quercus) and Hickory (Carya).—R. E. Tulloss

43^± mm wide, frequently gray (5Y6-5/1), often browner (2.5Y6/7) over disc (especially in young specimens), infrequently entirely brown, rarely entirely white, matte, finely virgate, hemispheric at first, becoming planoconvex, finally planar or concave; context white, not staining or bruising, 3.5^± mm thick over stipe, thinning evenly for two-thirds of gill length, then membarnous to margin; margin not appendiculate, striate (0.35 - 0.4R); universal veil as patch, white, smooth, thin-papery, not bruising or staining, detersile.

lamellae

free to narrowly adnate, with or without short decurrent line on stipe apex, close, white to pale cream in mass and side view, 1.5 - 4 mm broad, sometimes forking or anastomosing; lamellulae truncate, ??.

stipe

80 - 84 × 5 - 11 mm, white, narrowing upward, sometimes flaring at apex, finely pulverulent or finely squamulose above, finely longitudinally striatulate below,becoming tannish where handled or not staining or bruising, sometimes becoming silky/shiny where handled; context white to pale cream, not bruising, hollow to stuffed, with stuffing white and cottony comprising longitudinally oriented and densely packed fibrils, with central cylinder 1.5 - 4.5 mm wide; exannulate; universal veil as saccate volva, membranous, ca. 11^± mm wide, attached only at stipe base and sometimes easily removed, with exterior white, with interior gray, soft-leathery, 22-30 mm from base to highest point of limb, with limb < 1 mm thick, with limbus internal very thin and white and fibrous-felted.

Solitary to subgregarious. Iowa: In dark prairie soil under Quercus macrocarpa in lawn. Kentucky: Under Quercus alba near Pinus. New Jersey: At 15 - 325 m elev. In lawn under Carya illinoinensis with Pinus strobus at a greater distance or under Quercus (including Q. palustris) or in sandy soil of Quercus-Pinus rigida barrens. New York: At ca. 88 m elev. North Carolina: At ca. 253 m elev. Pennsylvania: At 340-435 m elev. in area predominated by Quercus or in sunny lawn with Carya ovata or in forest dominated by Quercus with some Tsuga canadensis. Virginia: In lawn near edge of woods including Quercus and Carya.

discussion

LIMITS TO GENETIC IDENTIFICATION As of 30.x.2019, Amanita rooseveltensis has not yielded data that allowed derivation of a complete sequence from its nrITS locus using unamended Sanger processing. In one case, we obtained a few characters of the 3' end of 5.8S and a complete ITS2. The situation bears the hallmarks of a nrITS that has failed to homogenize.

The nrLSU sequence for rooseveltensis is variable. Pairwise matching between the 16 sequences known on 11 July 2017 ranged from 99.368 percent of nucleotide positions identical to 99.912%. The variation mostly can be be found in one character position—a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP).

This species has previously also been listed in this site under the temporary code "A. sp-IA01."
