discussion

It is questionable as to whether the plate of Inzenga depicts the present fungus. The coloring of shading on the stipe, the pileus, the universal veil warts on the pileus, and in the central cylinder of the stipe (in cross-section) is the same umbrinous shade (without any obvious tint of gray). It could be argued reasonably that the use of this pigment is an artist's and/or printer's choice for shading of the basidiomes illustrated. Because the image is the sole evidence used to argue that Inzenga knew the taxon named for him, the conclusion that he did and that (therefore) the taxon is present in Sardinia does not seem justified by the available evidence.
