  • 1. Amanita clarionensis, St. Game Lands 63, Clarion, Clarion Co., Pennsylvania, U.S.A.

  • cap The cap of A. sp-N51 is 61 - 70 or more mm wide and grayish brown with a suggestion of an olive tint except for the center, which is very dark brown.  The cap flesh is white, except for a gray region below the cap skin.  The margin is grooved for about two-thirds of the cap radius, and the areas between grooves are decorated with small bumps.  There are no remnants of the volva on the cap in the material reviewed to date.
stem The exannulate stem in this species more or less 95 mm long and 8 to 8.5 mm wide.  The ground color is cream.  The upper stipe is covered with a fine powderiness for about 30 mm more or less.  At the base of the stem is a membranous volval sack (about 22 × 12 - 13 mm) with a white surface reminiscent of an eggshell.
odor/taste There is no noticeable odor in this species.
spores The spores of this species measure [22/1/1] (11.0-) 11.3 - 13.0 (-14.3) × (7.4-) 7.5 - 9.5 (-11.0) μm and are almost all ellipsoid and inamyloid.  Clamps are expected to be absent from bases of basidia.
discussion This apparent species was first collected at NAMA 2011 in Clarion Co., Pennsylvania, U.S.A. in forest including Oak, Canadian Hemlock, and Pine.

In many species of sect. Vaginatae having a membranous volva, there is a structure inside the volval sack that looks like a smaller, second volva.  This is the part of the volva that was originally placed between the gills and the stem in the developing mushroom.  In the present species, this structure is apparently very minimal.—R.
